Otranto is located on the eastern coast of Italy, on the Salento Peninsula. The city is 45 km from Lecce, on the shores of the Adriatic Sea.
UNESCO recognized the old city as an object of cultural heritage for the “message of peace” that its monuments mean.
Lecce is the heart of Puglia, the capital of the baroque and just a beautiful city in southern Italy. “South Florence” - that’s what name was attached to Lecce because of the huge number of architectural creations in the style of the XVI-XVIII centuries. A warm, sunny and friendly city that you should definitely visit.
Otranto is a small fishing town south of Lecce in a picturesque bay. The ancient port at this place was destroyed by the Turks in the 15th century. The fortress was built at the end of the 15th century. The small church of San Pietro of the 10th century has a Byzantine dome and ancient frescoes. The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin of the 11th century has a unique mosaic, beautiful columns, and an ancient crypt.
Sights and legendary hospitality:
Lecce
Lecce is a city in southern Italy in the Puglia region. It is located on the Salentina Peninsula on the very edge of the “Italian boot” in a place where the waters of the Ionian and Adriatic come into contact, and there are high picturesque cliffs, golden beaches, and forests. Lecce is the baroque "pearl of Italy". This is a city called "Florence or Rome of the South". And but for its location, Lecce would have become one of the most popular cities in the country long ago.
Otranto beaches
Otranto Beaches (Otranto Beach) are a few small beaches near the city walls. They are quite popular among Italians and tourists (in Italy they take second place). Here you can relax on a budget, but, of course, there are more expensive options - with visits to elite places of rest, restaurants, with a full range of beach activities. Small city beaches and Atlantis beach are within walking distance from the promenade, where the best hotels of Otranto Beach are also located. ". Sand dunes stretch for tens of kilometers along the coastline. There are beautiful white-sand beaches. On the most remote sections of the coast, beaches are surrounded by picturesque cliffs of white layered sandstone. Such quite places are very popular among Italians and visitors of the country. The area is famous for its clear green-blue sea with clear water.
Bauxite Lake Otranto
Bauxite Lake is a part of one of the national parks of regional significance in the province of Puglia. The hiking path starts from the most eastern point of Italy - the ancient Roman lighthouse Otranto, then the path passes through the coast and the Tricase forest and after a 50-kilometer distance it finishes at the impressive lighthouse of Leuca. Spectacular landscapes, terraces of olive trees, rocks and other pleasures on an area of 3200 hectares - are wonderful! It is an amazing place for those who enjoy long walks.
Otranto Cathedral
Otranto Cathedral is the main Catholic church in the city of Otranto, one of the most prominent in the Italian region of Puglia. It was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman house and an early Christian church, which was discovered during archaeological work carried out from 1986 to 1990.
The construction of the cathedral began in 1080, during the reign of Pontiff Gregory VII, and was completed eight years later. In the same 1088, the new cathedral was declared sacred. That period, the end of the 11th century, was the best time of ancient Otranto, called Hydrunton.
Otranto Castle
Otranto Castle, also known as Aragonese Castle, is located in the city of Otranto in the Italian region of Puglia. It was built in the second half of the 15th century by order of King Ferdinand II of Aragon to protect the city and coast from the invasion of the Turks. The architects Ciro Ciri and Francesco di Giorgio Martini, the geniuses of military engineering of the Renaissance period, worked on the castle project. Earlier there was also a defensive installation in this place. It was built by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II.
Catacombs Torre Pint
On the territory of the Salentine Peninsula - the “Italian heel” - countless towers were preserved. They were built along the coast in ancient times. A few kilometers on the south of Otranto, in the Valle delle Memorie Valley, on a high hill there is a round tower of Torre Pinta. The three short “wings” of the cross are oriented strictly west, south and east, and the dark gallery corresponding to the long “wing” faces north.
Otranto South Coast
The southern coast of Otranto consists of a long line of sloping cliffs, which makes these places not the most accessible for tourists. If you travel from the port of Otranto towards the Caves, you can visit the Grotta Palombara - the cave, so named because of the presence of pigeon colonies in it. Torre del Serpente is located a little further - the Serpentine Tower, also known as Torre del Idro or Cucuritstso - is the permanent symbol of the city. And above it, you can see Torre del Orte, built in the 1500s. At the end of Baia, Palombara Bay there is a Puntedda Beach, which is populated with fur seals.
